Jay Shah, the current Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is set to take charge as the Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) from December 1, 2024. At just 35 years of age, Shah will become the youngest individual to lead the ICC, succeeding Greg Barclay. With his transition, all eyes are now on Rohan Jaitley, President of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA), who is being considered a frontrunner to assume the prestigious role of BCCI Secretary.
Who is Rohan Jaitley?
Rohan Jaitley is a seasoned lawyer practicing in the Delhi High Court and Supreme Court of India. Son of the late Arun Jaitley, a renowned lawyer and former Union Cabinet Minister, and Sangeeta Jaitley, Rohan completed his early education at Delhi Public School, RK Puram. He holds a law degree from Amity University and further pursued his Master’s in Law from Cornell University in the United States.
Achievements as DDCA President
Rohan Jaitley has been instrumental in transforming the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) since taking office. When he assumed the presidency, DDCA faced severe financial distress with only Rs 85 lakh in reserves and liabilities of Rs 22 crore. Under his leadership:
- Over Rs 70 crore was invested in renovating the Arun Jaitley Stadium for the 2023 ODI World Cup.
- DDCA secured a Rs 100-crore fixed deposit, ensuring long-term stability.
- Cricket now represents over 95% of DDCA’s budget.
- Annual T20 revenues have climbed to Rs 65 crore, reflecting improved financial health.
DDCA Presidential Poll
Rohan Jaitley has filed his nomination for re-election as DDCA President. His competitors include his mother, Sangeeta Jaitley, and Kirti Azad, a former cricketer and Lok Sabha MP.
With his proven leadership in cricket administration and organizational turnaround, Rohan Jaitley is widely regarded as a strong contender for the BCCI Secretary post, carrying forward his father’s legacy and leaving an indelible mark in Indian cricket administration.
